I'm Gonna Be

SKINNY!  Just wait and see :).  There are some times when I think something would be good but I'm not totally committed or don't believe in it.  Other times I feel it in my gut and I just know I'm going to make something happen.  I've done it with several things through my life.  Only once have I with dieting.  I stepped on the scale for the first time in a long time, saw a weight that horrified me, it flipped a switch in me and I proceeded to lose 30 lbs.

This time when I stepped on the scale there was no surprise, but that magical switch flipped and I figured it was time.  And it's an odd feeling because it makes everything easy.  Working out 5 nights a week is easy.  Cutting my calories by probably more than half is easy.  I won't look a gift horse in the mouth though, I'll take it!

So I started 1 month ago yesterday and yesterday I weighed in 10 lbs lighter.  10 down, 40 to go.  I'm not shy about sharing!  And yes, 40.  Yowza.  I'm having a lot of fun mixing up the workouts.  Some nights I kickbox, some nights I do tae kwon do, some nights I run/walk a mile to and a mile from the gym, lifting weights while there.  I loved playing tennis with T on Tuesday and would love to try to do that weekly if we can.

I got sick with a cold that made me weak for 2 days and knocked me out cold for 1.  I can't remember ever recovering from a cold as quickly as I did this time.

If any of you are interested in maintaining your weight with a healthy diet, loosing weight, or gaining weight, I highly recommend caloriecount.com.  They've got a fantastic and easy to read daily analysis chart that lets you know what you're short/over on.  Just track your food for 1 day and see what it says.  I bet you'll be surprised!

I stopped by Whole Foods today for the first time ever.  It's an ironic twist that I feel like I've come full circle.  Growing up in a healthy household made me run for the junk food as soon as I got out.  Now, being older and having kids of my own, I'm very interested in the healthier food!  But I'll definitely be more moderate than my father was!

Running Man

Once upon a time about a year ago I took Cole out with me to run.  He made it about 1 1/2 blocks and was officially done.  I've been run/walking almost every day lately and after Cole had a really good day at school I offered up for him to come with me and he did.  He was very excited about it and he did great.  We ran into a neighborhood kid mid-walk and she asked if we wanted to go to the park where she was going so we did.  Cole ran the whole way there and home and his walking breaks lasted about 2 seconds.  He even pushed me it was amazing!

We also started Cole in tae kwon do.  Because of their schedule, we can only make it once a week, but he's totally in love with it and a bit of a natural.  That's my boy!  I've been amazed at how quickly he picks up on the things I show him at home and I think it may be a long term thing for him.

It's amazing to see Cole growing into such a little boy.  I'll miss this phase I'm sure!

Bring It!

I have spent the last 6 nights and most of Saturday and Sunday working on this sale.  I reserved about 1 hour of free time a day for myself.  Is the money we make from it worth almost every minute of my free and family time for a week?  Probably not!  This may be the last sale we do, or at least the last one for a long, long time.  I still didn't even manage to get through all of the house like I had hoped but we at least finished going through the entire basement and some of the house.  In any case, I'll be thrilled when we're done with it all.  Then it will be on to yard maintenance.

I booked our flights and hotel today for our 10 year anniversary celebration!  I also found out about some money from a rewards card I was unaware of so that will pay for our visit to Universal for a couple of days.  When I was filling out an online form, I entered my birth date and realized I needed to scroll a bit to get to my birthdate.  Granted, it started at 2012 which was a bit ridiculous (what 3 month old is filling out an online form?) but it still stopped me mentally for a moment!

The boys are doing great and (crossing fingers) we've all been healthy for a few weeks now.  We'll probably be scheduling Cole's ear surgery soon.  Wish us luck for this sale!

Crankin' Along

We are having a GARAGE SALE!  Which probably isn't nearly as exciting when I haven't had a few glasses of wine...

Yesterday we went shopping and picked up a portable air conditioner for our computer room which is a major improvement up here where every summer it has gotten to be 90 degrees in this tiny little room.  T picked out a grill we'll have delivered on Tuesday that's he's very excited for, and I got myself some garage sale stickers.  Honestly, the things that qualify as an exciting day now that we're homeowners with kids is no where near what would have qualified 10 years ago!

And speaking of 10 years, our wedding anniversary is coming up.  I wanted to surprise T with a planned vacation but was worried he might try to do the same for me and boy would that be an expensive mistake.  So I brought it up the other day and he was indeed thinking about doing the same thing only his ideas for locale were way better than mine!  So stay tuned to hear where that might lead us in June!

In the meantime, T is being sent to Shanghai for work.  Seriously people, 9 years (at our company) and I've been around the states for work, but he's not even there for 6 months and on his way to Shanghai!  Lucky guy!  I'm sure excited for him though!

We threw together a last minute garage sale a few years ago but during it we found out we were holding it one week after the city-wide so no one was out and it went okay but overall was pretty lame.  Also, we were holding on to Cole's stuff for our next kid so we didn't have any baby stuff which is a big draw.  This year we're getting rid of everything they used in the first 2 years so hundreds of items of clothing (I did a lot of folding!) and tons of toys and infant stuff.  We have 3 bouncy chairs!  Looking over it all it feels like we went a little overboard!  This year we're holding it during the city-wide and we've gotten our names onto the official printout and there's also a city Facebook online garage sale page I plan to post on about it so it should be better than last time.

Overall, I'm just pumped to be clearing the basement out of SO much stuff.  We were half-way to being on an episode of hoarders down there (minus the rotten food and 80 cats).  If I can manage to finish getting everything out in time, then I plan to go through the house to really start digging in.  Which brings me to my theory I'd love to hear your thoughts on.  I think that our generation and those before us grew up interacting with more tangible things.  For example, I have a whole storage bin full of craft stuff I've been hanging on to and adding to for a decade.  I always thought it would be fun to play around with it and do something with it but let's face it, it's been a decade!  It seems like everything now is electronic.  Everything I want to do my in my free time is either athletic (bike, skii's, roller-blades), or electronic (computer games, movies, entertainment center).  Other than the basic things we need for living (towels, dishes) the rest is unnecessary.  All those things I thought I'd get to "some day".  Let's face it, it will be decades before I have the kind of free time that brings those things to the front of the list.

Long Term Effects

I've mentioned it before about how T does not do well with his boys being sick.  With anyone in general, but his boys really send him over the top.  It wasn't just around the time of Kai being in the NICU.

Right now Cole has a cough and he played outside then spent dinner with a slight wheeze.  That's it.  Nothing else to it.  Certainly not ideal, but not a huge deal.  It is making T extremely uncomfortable, nervous, and stressed out.  I feel sometimes like we're haunted by almost losing Kai.  T already didn't do well at all with fevers and things but that two weeks in the NICU almost 2 years ago now I think will stay with him forever.

My heart goes out to him.  It's one of those things you wish you could make better for someone you love but there's nothing you can do but watch from the sidelines.

You're Just Kidding!

We tease Cole all the time.  Pretty much every time he asks a question we know he knows the answer to, we answer with something else.

C: "Are we there yet?"
(driving down the highway)
T or M: "Yup!  Get out!"
C: "Noooo you're just kidding!"

The good news is that with such an abundance of teasing he's learned to pay attention to the way we deliver our answers and to think about the results.  Sometimes we're very obvious like when he asked what's for dinner tonight and I told him worms and beetles.  Surprisingly, (or not?) he does have to take a few seconds to consider before he decides we're teasing.  Sometimes it's more subtle (subtle to a 4 year old) like saying he should take a bath while we eat dinner.

It's been a ton of fun hitting this new stage of development with him.  He thinks it's funny and he occasionally give it a shot himself.  I hope it will help him develop more attentiveness to the way people say things, teach him to think about what is being said, and encourage him not to take life in general too seriously.

Kai has seemed to change a lot too.  For him it's been these last two weeks really.  He seems to understand what is going on around him much more and the amount of words he understands (following simple instructions) has really exploded.  One thing he still isn't growing out of though is his complete impatience for anything.  When he wants in the high chair he'll lose his mind until we feed him.  The second he's done with his last bite, he'll hand you everything on his tray (an improvement) but if you aren't there and taking it within literally 10 seconds, every piece of food and every utensil will get thrown on the floor immediately.  As soon as you get him down, he's fine.

Kai doesn't use daddy and mommy correctly.  Six months ago he only said daddy. But T worked so hard trying to get him to say mommy that I think Kai thought T was correcting him, so now he calls us both Mommy.

Random thoughts!

February Pictures

Sorry it's fuzzy but it's the only one I got.  I had to show you the size of Cole's 4 year old foot next to mine.  I wear a woman's size 11 shoe... the boy is FOUR!

Cole's first Valentine's Day box.  We probably spent an hour making it and he loved it.  He placed the robots and the big hart on the side where they are and he chose the X.  Two lovey robots aren't complete without an X marks the spot for treasure you know!  Two of the green dots are the robots little boys, one is a dog, and the yellow one is the green dots sister.
